BONNIE L. BAKER concentrates her
practice in the areas of healthcare, medical malpractice, corporate law,
litigation, wills, probate and estate planning. Bonnie joined the firm
following her graduation from the UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA SCHOOL OF LAW
where she served as an officer in both the Student Bar Association and
the Women’s Law Student Association and competed successfully in moot
court competition. Bonnie received her Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum
laude from the University of Georgia, where she was Phi Beta Kappa, a
President’s Scholar, and a member of the Phi Kappa Phi and Golden Key
Honor Societies.
In her healthcare
practice, Bonnie advises hospitals, long term healthcare facilities, and
physician practice groups on business issues (contract review, corporate
information, reorganization); Corporate Compliance (as back-up Corporate
Compliance Officer for hospital client, policies and procedures,
regulatory issues); medical staff issues (credentialing, Data Bank
reporting, medical staff hearings, policies and procedures); right to
die, advanced directives and ethical issues (consultation on specific
case issues, Ethics Committee for hospital client, policies and
procedures). Bonnie also advises clients on medical malpractice defense
and risk management issues, including conducting all phases of
litigation (investigation, preparation of pleadings, depositions and
discovery, motions, legal analysis, medical records review, negotiation
and trial and/or alternative dispute resolution). In an attempt to avoid
litigation, Bonnie advises clients on risk management issues (case
specific consultations, review of incident reports, preparation of
policies and procedures for hospitals, physician groups, long term care
facilities and related entities on a diverse range of health law related
issues).
Bonnie’s corporate clients include numerous enterprises operating in
Henry County and the greater Atlanta area as well as throughout the
United States. Corporate clients rely on Bonnie for advice in the areas
of contracts, mergers, acquisitions, dissolutions and liquidations,
corporate reorganization and other matters.
In her wills, probate and estate planning practice, Bonnie represents
clients in all phases of probate, drafts wills and related documents,
and advises clients on such issues as Medicare/Medicaid planning, long
term care, and the preparation of advanced directives. The package of
services that Bonnie offers in this area—also called Elder Law—is often
utilized by clients who wish to plan and prepare for their later years.
Bonnie is a past president of the Henry County Bar Association and a
member of the Henry Medical Center Foundation Associate Board. Bonnie
has served on several legislative and policy committees of the Georgia
Hospital Association and the Georgia Academy of Hospital Attorneys. She
and her husband, Tom Shanahan, have one son, Matthew.
